Experience behind the advice
Dr. Anthony “Tony” Tanaydin, PhD, MBB
Data scientist, Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, operational excellence leader, educator, and business advisor.
Known as DrT, Tony has spent more than two decades connecting analytical rigor with practical business improvement. His work spans strategy and business planning, customer experience, P&L improvement, process transformation, data science, and the development of people who lead improvement.
From analysis to business results
Tony began teaching in Ankara, Turkey, while completing his graduate studies. He later moved to the United States to pursue a PhD in applied data analytics at Purdue University, where he taught data analytics, probability, and computer applications and advised faculty and graduate students.
At Hewlett-Packard in Oregon, he applied data analytics to practical business problems, helped introduce Six Sigma, and expanded into business strategy, planning, quality, and customer support. His experience later included SAS Institute, federal government work, PepsiCo/Frito-Lay, and operational excellence leadership across eight North American GKN Aerospace sites.
Through LodeStar Institute, Tony has worked across manufacturing, technology, construction, finance, banking, healthcare, medical devices, and owner-operated businesses. The common thread is practical: understand how the business works, identify what is driving the problem, improve the process, and measure the result.
Business perspective + analytical depth
His experience ranges from strategy and business planning for a roughly $20 billion business to detailed data analysis, Lean Six Sigma deployment, customer experience, operational improvement, training, and mentoring.
Analytics, data science, machine learning, and AI expand the available toolkit. They support the work when useful; the business problem and sound judgment determine what should be used.
Teaching and mentoring
Teaching has remained a constant throughout Tony’s career, including work at Ankara University, Purdue University, Oregon State University, and Southern Methodist University. He teaches and mentors in data analytics, machine learning, AI, data science, critical thinking, and operational improvement.
The objective is not simply to teach a tool. It is to develop people who can ask better questions, evaluate evidence, understand uncertainty, and make sound decisions.
Education and professional service
Tony earned a BS in mathematics and an MS in quantitative analysis from Ankara University, followed by an MS in quantitative analysis and PhD, Purdue University from Purdue University. His doctoral work explored multivariate quality problems under Professor George McCabe.
His professional service has included the Baldrige National Quality Program, leadership roles with the American Society for Quality, and participation in the American Analytical Association. His qualifications include Lean Six Sigma / Operational Excellence and Design for Six Sigma Master Black Belt experience.
Combining theory and practice
LodeStar’s longstanding phrase captures Tony’s approach: rigorous methods matter, but their value is realized only when they help people solve a real problem and produce a better result.
